From Bow to Brew – Dragon Ball, JoJo, and the Power of Zōkin-gake🇫🇷🇮🇩🇨🇦 – Mar 2026
March turned out to be a wonderfully international month.
I had the pleasure of welcoming guests from France, Indonesia, and Canada to the Tokyo Karate Dojo Experience.
Each session offered a memorable encounter as we explored breathing, body awareness, and the Japanese approach to relaxation and movement together.
Connecting with people from different cultures through the body left a strong impression on me this month.
The two guests from France and the guest from Canada happened to be from the same generation as me.
We bonded over conversations about Dragon Ball and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, which made our time together feel warm and familiar.
Another highlight was their interest in zōkin-gake — the traditional floor-cleaning practice.
Every Japanese person has done this at least once in elementary school.
By keeping the core engaged and maintaining abdominal pressure, the limbs become free, and the body simply moves forward with the help of gravity.
As a child, I disliked it, but now I realize how much it helped develop body awareness.
I’ve heard that some modern schools no longer have students clean their classrooms in this way.
Personally, I hope this cultural practice continues, as it teaches both physical awareness and respect for shared spaces.
March was filled with warm encounters and meaningful moments shared through the body.
I sincerely hope each guest’s journey in Japan continues to be wonderful.
