Karate 'Gasshuku' (Training Camp) at a Hot Spring Inn in Chichibu
Last weekend, I participated in a Gasshuku organised by my karate dojo.
A Gasshuku is not only a place for training but also an opportunity to experience something special that you cannot get in everyday life.
I always look forward to Gasshuku because I can receive valuable guidance from my Sensei and train intensively with my fellow practitioners.
Additionally, it was a great pleasure to meet again with the Italian karate friend I met last year and my fellow seniors from the same prefecture.
By the way, a Gasshuku at a hot spring inn is a unique style specific to Japan.
Its greatest charm lies in the ability to immerse oneself in the hot springs to soothe both body and mind after focusing on training and study.
Furthermore, it offers the opportunity to savour local culture through delicious meals.
The meals served at the inn feature seasonal ingredients and local dishes, allowing you to feel the tradition and warmth of the region.
I also believe that Japanese-style Gasshuku is an excellent opportunity to learn ‘Kikubari’ (consideration).
In every aspect of the stay, from meal service and room sharing to hot spring etiquette, cooperation with fellow participants and those around you is required, naturally cultivating a sense of the ‘Kikubari’ spirit.
During this Gasshuku, I was deeply moved to see foreign participants naturally embrace the culture and actively participate in tasks like serving meals.
Through such acts of consideration, I once again felt the depth of Japanese culture.
This Gasshuku was a valuable experience not only for karate but also for gaining a deeper understanding of Japanese culture.
