What happened in classes last week.
‘What would be the ideal way to move?’
I have been thinking about this since I came to Tokyo.
When I first started studying at my current dojo, I did not know what I should be doing, but through the various experiences I have had, I have been able to formulate my own thoughts on the subject.
Some of these experiences include ‘teaching karate to adult beginners’.
I believe that it is possible to start karate as an adult and train in between jobs, and although it may be difficult to achieve the goal of winning a big tournament, it is possible to learn good striking, good kicking, good blocks and good body usage.
Last week, I had the opportunity to teach one woman on Wednesday and another on Thursday.
They came on different days, so of course they did not know each other, but both were wondering about their knees when they were standing.
In our karate, standing with knees bent or standing with the back of the knees (hikagami) taut is not an ideal state.
You need to be in just the right state, but to be honest I was surprised because I did not expect to be asked such a question in the first session.
I feel that both of them will be amazing in a year’s time.
